Our History

Born in the Oil Boom: 1903–1919

The story of Central Texas Tool Co. began over a century ago in 1903 with J.A. Cree. Following the discovery of oil in Ohio, Cree opened his first oilfield repair shop in Utica, Ohio. As the energy industry expanded across the region, Cree’s operations grew alongside it, manufacturing heavy-duty cable tools for drilling and fishing.

When the historic oil rush shifted southwest to Texas, Cree set his sights on the Lone Star State. In 1919, two dedicated employees—W.J. Carpenter and H.A. Young—loaded machinery onto trains and headed south. They established their first Texas shop in Gorman under the name Cree & Co.

Following the Frontier: The Boomtown Era

During the dynamic early years of the Texas oil boom, Cree & Co. moved wherever the work was needed. Carpenter and Young routinely dismantled, transported, and reassembled their shop from one boomtown to the next, serving oilmen in Pioneer, Coleman, and Cross Plains.

Through grit, adaptability, and unwavering craft, they built a reputation for reliable repairs that kept the oil industry moving.

Finding a Permanent Home in Abilene: 1937

In 1937, the Coleman shop made its final move to 1440 Walnut Street in Abilene, Texas, re-establishing itself under a new name: Central Texas Tool Co.

Under the leadership and ownership of W.J. Carpenter, the Abilene shop became a cornerstone of local manufacturing and industrial repair.

Generations of Craftsmanship & Community

Since 1937, Central Texas Tool Co. has passed through multiple generations of Carpenter men, weathering the natural booms and busts of the Texas energy market. To this day, our shop operates with the same legendary belt-driven lathes and classic machinery that arrived here over a century ago—a true testament to American manufacturing and durability.

However, we know that machinery and tools alone don't make a business last. Our customers do.

At Central Texas Tool Co., we treat every person who walks through our doors as more than just a client—you are part of our extended family and community. Together, we look forward to honoring our heritage by serving your machinery and repair needs for generations to come.
